Contract:  Full-time internship position to work and train in our first Tanzanian schools.   Minimum duration will be 3 months for a successfully selected teaching intern.   
NB:  This is an unpaid internship position and is for primarily for training purposes and for Silverleaf Academy management to see how well you perform on-the-job.   Lunch and transport to the school will be provided during the internship but no further additional cash stipend.  
Deadline: Applications can be accepted throughout the year but teaching interns will generally only start their programmes together at the start of each term.

Summary of Position:
Silverleaf Academy is a new group of affordable, high quality schools in Tanzania. Our mission is to provide the highest quality learning at the most affordable levels. We are launching our first set of primary schools in the towns of Moshi and Arusha. Silverleaf Academy is looking for Assistant Teachers who will be able to work along with qualified teachers to support the pupils, teachers, parents and the school to establish a supportive and nurturing learning environment.  Silverleaf Academy use special education tablets in their schools, and all teachers will receive training on how to use these tablets effectively. 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the qualified teacher in planning and teaching pupils in accordance with the national curriculum and assessing and recording progress and prepare pupils for examinations
  • Works cooperatively with the teacher to ensure adequate attention and instructions are given to pupils
  • Acts and takes over the teacher full role in the absence of the teacher in leading the class as per the planned schedule
  • Able to develop pupil’s cognitive, numerical and verbal reasoning skills by using creative, interactive and engaging teaching methods to encourage pupils to actively participate in classroom activities
  • To develop and promote the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude
  • Pay attention to each individual pupils progress and evaluate their learning abilities by setting assignments and homework projects
  • Educating pupils in a fun and engaging manner
  • Assisting with school events, trips and school activities
  • Ready to attend training opportunities provided by Silverleaf or recommended by Head Teacher and willing to commit to a long term teaching career
  • Willingness to participate in significant in service training which Silverleaf Academy will organize at a central level and a school by school basis
  • Required to continuously keep up to date on new teaching methods and developments in the curriculum and willing to partially pay for their Diploma level on the job education qualification over a 1-2 year period (Silverleaf will pay for some of the costs of training)
  • Required to lead students in a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as music, sports, life skills and entrepreneurship training

Qualifications/Experience:
  • A-Level Secondary School Graduate, ideally Certificate or Diploma level qualifications in an education specific subject
  • Take a flexible approach to work
  • Must be enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn new skills
  • Must have a good standard of education together with good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Clear understanding of the essential qualities for effective teaching and learning
  • Good teaching, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Some experience working with children
  • Good in written and verbal skills in both English and Swahili
  • Interest in technology coupled with ability and/or willingness to use electronic tablets for delivering the curriculum
  • Desire to continue consistent in-service teacher training and seek longer term school leadership positions
