World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) is a nonprofit, autonomous international agricultural
research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. The Center conducts research and development programs that contribute to alleviating poverty and malnutrition in the developing world through the increased production and consumption of nutritious and health-promoting vegetables. WorldVeg – Eastern and Southern Africa,located in Arusha, Tanzania, conducts vegetable research and training and provides information services for the benefit of its stakeholders in the horticultural ·sector in Africa. As part of its project ‘Vegetable Business Hubs for Youth’ funded by the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Center is looking for a talented, diligent, ambitious and reliable Tanzanian citizen, who places importance on quality, team-work and diligence for the following positions under the nationally recruited staff (NRS) category.

Position: Vegetable Marketing Manager

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will report to the Project Manager and be in charge of day-to-day project implementation activities including training.

Duty station
Arusha, Tanzania

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical training for farmers focusing on vegetable marketing, market analysis, group dynamics and formation, and price negotiation
  • Identify market niches for new vegetable products
  • Being involved in the identification and monitoring of production standards
  • Coordinate the collection, grading, packing, and delivery of vegetable crops produced by 5-6 different youth groups, ensure timely delivery and take care of all logistics
  • Analyze the market.demand for different vegetable crops at local and regional level
  • Support groups to develop production plans in order to ensure timely supply of vegetables
  • Collaborate with CRS and other NGOs and private sector partners to facilitate the dissemination of technologies developed and tested by WorldVeg
  • Contribute to the project reporting and represent the project on different workshops and other events


Skills, knowledge and qualifications
  • An Master of Science (MSc) in horticulture, agriculture, agribusiness or equivalent from an institution accredited by the Tanzania Commission of Universities
  • A minimum of five years of experience in horticultural production and marketing within an international environment, preferably an international non-governmental organization (NGO) or an international private sector company, is highly preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS office applications · (Word, Excel, Power point, Access)
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili (spoken and written)
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners and colleagues in a multicultural setting

Position: Agronomist

Duty station
Arusha, Tanzania

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will report to the Project Manager and be in charge of day-to-day project implementation activities including training and capacity building activities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct an agronomic in collaboration with vegetable producers to identify the main limiting factors for vegetable production
  • Development of innovative vegetable cropping systems including new eco-friendly practices with producers and others experts
  • Analyze together with other WorldVeg staff which technology investments are needed to improve and strengthen the production capacity of the youth groups
  • Conduct technical training for farmers focusing on vegetable production techniques and promotion of postharvest technologies
  • Facilitate the introduction of resource-efficient technologies such as irrigation kits, protected cultivation. grafting to improve production and quality of produce Monitor development and sanitary quality of the crops, estimate yields and harvest schedules
  • Provide technical support to producers to overcome crop pests based on Integrated Pest management strategies (IPM)
  • Measure the quality and quantity of vegetables. produced by six different youth groups.
  • Being involved in the identification and monitoring of production standards, including certification under private standards or Global GAP
  • Collaborate with CRS and other NGOs and private sector partners to facilitate the dissemination of technologies developed and tested by WorldVeg
  • Contribute to the project reporting and represent the project on different workshops and other events
