The Niambie project provides a unique space in the national media for young
people to discuss important issues on their own terms and in their own
language. It engages and informs young people from across Tanzania, creating a
platform for them to talk to their leaders. Evidence shows that Niambie
contributes to increased self-efficacy among young people and women and
increased ability to engage in discussions and take action on issues that
matter to them.

Project outputs include

-->A national youth-focused radio show
-->Social media channels that provide a space for young people to interact with each other and share their thoughts on important issues
-->Capacity-building with young professionals from five regions across Tanzania
-->Collaborative partnerships with national media organizations who broadcast the Niambie radio programme

Job purpose

The Senior Trainer/Mentor ST/M will report to the Partnerships Development
Manager. S/he will work directly with local radio stations and support local
trainer/mentors to deliver training and mentoring sessions. The successful
candidate will also support local trainer/mentors to deliver interactive
programmes on gender, health and good governance. The ST/M will play a
critical role in building and strengthening capacity of local partner stations
by ensuring skills are developed and maintained to support station outputs.
The ST/M will editorially manage the local trainer/mentors and oversee the
design of training plans, ensuring the training and mentoring process is
harmonized to achieve results.

Main duties and accountabilities

-->Manage a growing team of local trainer/mentors working under the Gender, Health and Governance projects run by BBC Media Action Tanzania
-->Train BBC Media Action partner station staff to improve and sustain their capacity in journalism
-->Directly mentor the primary partner station as well as oversee the other partner stations under the Gender project, working closely with mentors
-->Identify the training needs of all partners of the Niambie II project, in order to facilitate the design of suitable training packages for implementation by the trainer/mentors
-->Oversee the delivery of training packages, ensuring impact is maximised
-->Conduct timely spot-checks and analyse local programmes in order to provide feedback to the projects, production and research teams
-->Ensure that all programming and training meet the highest BBC standards, as well as delivering the project’s development objectives
-->Ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve project outputs
-->Manage the logistics of all international trainers’ visits for project support
-->Maintain and manage relationships with partner station management, teams and YP’s
-->Support trainer/mentors to establish online, mobile and social media aspects of the project
-->Assist with project co-ordination, including work planning, ensuring health and safety of project staff, and liaising with project partners and government officials as required
-->Contribute to narrative and financial reports on project implementation
-->Present weekly reports on partner station progress to the Gender Project Manager, including a section on trainer/mentor progress
-->Ensure training activities meet all contractual requirements of the project donors
-->Maintain contact with partner stations to ensure managers and radio station staff are aware of the training goals and ensuring on-going impact
-->Manage the training calendar for the Niambie project and RPFC
-->Provide in-depth and on-going support to new Niambie partner radio stations and YP’s as per the objectives of the project
-->Analyze and spot-check the Niambie radio programme in order to provide feedback to production team
-->Develop work plans, facilitate training logistics, and identify and document lessons learned from each training
-->Take lead in planning and preparation of all Niambie and RPFC trainings
-->Work closely with other teams to develop creative, innovative approaches to training
-->Ensure central training and workshop for YP’s are well coordinated and facilitated
-->Ensure CS team is well updated and refreshed on training/mentoring approaches by suggesting and coordinating refresher in-house training
-->Develop monthly reports, compiling data from other mentor’s weekly reports, and share with other teams within BBC Media Action
-->Perform any other duties that may be assigned.

Required skills, knowledge and experience

-->Strong editorial judgement, knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines and substantial radio production experience essential; including production of audience participation formats and gender and health programming
-->Degree or diploma in journalism, mass communication or related field
-->Fluent in English and Swahili
-->Significant experience of planning training courses and training journalists in Africa essential
-->Strong understanding of and commitment to issues of gender, health, governance, transparency, accountability, financial sustainability and participation
-->An awareness of the importance of new media and how it affects journalism and a willingness to learn the skills required to deliver journalism training using online means
-->Understand and comply with BBC Media Action’s Safeguarding policy and the staff Code of Conduct
-->Participate in relevant mandatory training on Safeguarding and Respect at Work
-->Report any Safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the Country Director, or using the Whistleblowing Policy
-->Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
-->Experience of operating effectively in difficult, highly politically sensitive and often fluid environments
-->Good working knowledge of computer packages including Email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

-->Demonstrable understanding of the role of communications in development
-->Thorough grasp of core BBC values.
-->Substantive experience of successfully managing diverse teams of creative and support staff.

The role may involve working with groups of vulnerable children and adults.
For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media
