QUALITATIVE RESEACRH COORDINATOR - CUHAS


Overall Description: 
This full-time Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day activities of the Canadian government funded IMCHA synergy project within Mama na Mtoto (MnM) project titled “A STUDY ON BARRIERS AND ENABLERS AFFECTING GENDER, EQUITY, AND SCALE-UP IN LAKE ZONE (2017-2020)”. 

  • Directly manages the overall study, organizing staff trainings, designing and implementing, monitoring and evaluating the research processes in coordination with the principal investigators and co investigators and site research leads. 
  • Ensures timely collection and reporting of data, ensures quality and timely achievement of research timeline goals. 
  • Organizing interviews with communities, facilitators, providers and decision makers. Collecting, transcribing, translation and managing the qualitative data, and assist in data analysis 
  • He/she will work with investigators from the Catholic University of Health Allied Sciences (CUHASBugando), University of Calgary (UC), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and implementing teams from Agriteam, Mwanza Region and District Health Teams.

Job Specification Qualifications: 

  • A candidate should have at minimum, the following: 
  • A Master’s degree (Social sciences or Public health, Community health, Development studies will be considered an asset); 
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging with qualitative research in health setting. Experience conducting qualitative research (open-ended interviews or group discussions) in a work or academic context and using at least one qualitative analysis software such as NVivo, atlas.ti or others. 
  • Training and practical experience with data collection, management and analysis for both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. 
  • Experience in designing and implementing qualitative data collection tools and processes. 
  • Skills and training related to scientific research methodology, protocol and ethics compliance, and scientific reporting. 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a leadership position for a scientific field or qualitative research project, preferably externally funded. 
  • Experience in project coordination/management including planning (using work plans), report writing, financial management (and budgeting), general administration and human resource management are important. 
  • Experience of working and communicating with different types of people and Excellent communication skills and an ability to listen without passing judgement. 
  • Fluency (written and spoken) in local dialects (i.e. Swahili) and English.Fluency in Sukuma language will be an added value. Ability to read and absorb information, and identify interesting and important issues. 

Flexibility for hours and work location. The position will be based in Mwanza city, however extended overnight field stays will be expected during data collection and the position will require regular (one day per week) and intermittent (during data collection periods) days based in the Misungwi field office. 

In addition, the following are highly desirable: 


  • Past Experience/Expertise: Community work; Maternal, new-born and child health; Leadership and teamwork including collaboration involving many stakeholders; results-based management (RBM) including design, collection, analysis and reporting involving SMART indicators; experience reporting to research and/or development funding agencies. 
  • Personal traits/aptitude: An interest in, and empathy towards members of local communities, health settings, Understanding of, and respect for, local norms of different groups of people, Honesty, integrity, and commitment; sensitivity to vulnerable populations; Willingness to travel and conduct interviews in rural areas and an ability to build rapport with communities. 
  • Professional: Desire to learn and develop new skills. Able to deliver written work in a time bound manner, Academic interest as demonstrated by publications, study involvement, proposalwriting, presentations; demonstrated ability and interest to transfer knowledge through training, capacity building and mentoring.
