SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PhD IN PUBLIC HEALTH/HEALTH
SYSTEMS
The successful applicant will receive a scholarship from DAAD to undertake a three
year Phd in Public Health within the Institute of Public Health at Tumaini
University, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College

1. Application procedure
This is a three stage application process.
i. The first selection will be conducted by the PhD selection committee.
ii. Applicants who pass through the first stage must attend KCMUCo to present their
research to an appointed board
iii. Applicants who pass through the second stage are then required to submit their
DAAD application documents through the DAAD portal. The final selection will
be made by DAAD.
If you are shortlisted but not intending to continue with your application at any point we
request you notify us to enable your opportunity to be offered to another applicant.
The timelines are listed below and will be strictly adhered to.


2. Application Requirements
a. A related Master degree or an equivalent qualification either from a recognized
University/Institution with a minimum pass at B level.
a. The last university degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the
time of application.
b. Citizenship of a country in Sub-Saharan Africa
c. Proof of admission to the desired degree course or official letter assuring admission
d. Staff member of a public or private university (or candidate considered for teaching or
research staff recruitment)

3. Application Documents and Procedures
a. A preliminary PhD research proposal (concept note) of up to 15 pages (minimum 10)
must be submitted with the application together with the supervisor’s names so as to
be endorsed officially by the College and Senate. The PhD proposal should address
research in the field of public health and/or health systems research.
b. A copy of financial receipt in respect of application fees paid.
c. Completed KCMUCo application forms

4. If shortlisted you then have to provide the following documents to DAAD in
addition to the application documents requested by KCMUCo (listed above),.
Please note that in order to complete this step you will have to log in in advance
to create an account.
a. Filled and signed DAAD Application Form for In-Country/In-Region Scholarships
to be downloaded, filed and then uploaded onto the DAAD portal.
b. Signed curriculum vitae; please use the Europass CV template
(http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu)
c. Certified scanned PDF copies of all university degree certificates
d. Certified scanned PDF copies of all university transcripts
e. A signed copy of the DAAD Information Sheet for Students
f. At least temporary admission letter including fee structure of respective course
(scanned PDF copy), or an official letter assuring admission, this will be provided to
you in soft if you are successful during the first shortlisting
g. PhD research proposal including a detailed work plan (10-15 pages), plagiarism
will be checked! (PDF format to be uploaded in the DAAD Portal and a word
format to be emailed to applications@daadafrica.org upon short listing by
KCMUCo and establishment of a DAAD Portal account)
h. Recommendation letter by the head of department indicating that you are a present or
prospective member of staff and how you will be intergrated into the staff
development agenda of the university (scanned PDF copy)
i. Confirmation of study leave from your university (if applicable; scanned PDF copy)
Confirmation of teaching release (University staff members only: scanned PDF copy)
j. Upon successful application in the portal a summary of the entire application will be
produced. All shortlisted applicants have to send their summaries via email to
applications@daadafrica.org

5. Timeline
a. Completed applications must be submitted by 13th January, 2017
b. Scholarships will be shortlisted by 10th February, 2017
c. Successful shortlisted candidates must present their concepts to the
department on 23rd February, 2017
d. Candidates shortlisted after the presentation have to submit to
DAAD through the portal by 22nd March 2017
e. Final Scholarship decisions will be made by mid May 2017
f. The scholarship will begin in October 2017.

6. Duration of the scholarship
The awards are available for up to a maximum of three years. The scholarship is initially
granted for one year and may be extended upon individual request and receipt of a
complete application by using a form to be availed at the appropriate time in the DAAD
Portal. The application of the renewal of existing scholarships has to be submitted via the
DAAD Portal upon request. Generally this is from the month of April 2017.

7. The Value of the Scholarship
DAAD will pay tuition fees to the university according to the submitted fees structure
and a monthly stipend to the scholarship holder, covering cost of living including
accommodation. DAAD rates will apply for the monthly stipend. Later increments of
any fees and charges cannot be considered.
In addition, the scholarship holder will receive an annual study and research allowance.
This allowance is intended to assist in covering any costs related to the students’ research
project. The annual study research allowance is paid in local currency and is equivalent
to the amount of EUR 920.00 for PhD scholarship holders. Within the final year o
studies DAAD pays a lump sum of EUR 1,025.00 to the scholarship holder (in the local
currency). This final allowance is granted to assist in covering of the thesis production
costs in the last year of the course of studies.
Please note that DAAD scholarships are not a full scholarship. DAAD will only provide
funding as stated above. It is not possible to apply for additional funding (e.g. lab, field
work, conferences, technical equipment, books, travel etc.)
