Field Program Assessor
Reports to: Director of Monitoring and Evaluation

The Tanzania People and Wildlife Fund (TPW) is a Tanzanian nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and important natural habitats through a community-based approach. TPW helps rural communities develop their skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these landscapes while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of community-led initiatives, the organization provides information, training and service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen local institutions and community-driven actions for natural resource management and wildlife conservation.

TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania.Sharing a boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well as an educational center where rural community members improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands-on skills in natural resource management. From this center, TPW operates programs in four major programmatic areas: 
  • human-wildlife conflict prevention, 
  • youth environmental education and adult capacity building & training, 
  • natural resource conservation and rangeland management
  • environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.

Position Description:
TPW is looking for a passionate and energetic individual to work as a member of the Monitoring and Evaluation team to assess and verify the outcomes of TPW’s field programs, particularly for the humanwildlife conflict program. Primary tasks include conducting regular condition assessments of existing Living Walls (fortified bomas) and verifying installations of new Living Walls. These tasks require both physical measurements and also discussions with community members. Additional tasks will likely be added over time. Most data collection will be via Smartphone apps. The incumbent will work closely with both a team lead and an assistant to conduct activities. Although this position will be stationed at the Noloholo Environmental Center, extensive multi-day travel will be required throughout rural areas of northern Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct regular field assessments of the condition of existing Living Walls under the direction of TPW’s Monitoring and Evaluation department
  • Verify the specifications of newly installed Living Walls
  • Conduct other field assessments and verifications as needed across TPW’s diverse programs
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have at least a certificate or diploma and experience with field data collection, preferably using mobile applications. Applicants must demonstrate they are comfortable working independently while engaging community members.

  • Strong spoken English skills
  • Ability to drive a motorbike
  • Strong time management skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Smartphones as a tool for data collection
  • Comfort working and traveling independently
  • Ability to communicate and interact successfully in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience conducting interviews preferred
  • Fluency in Maasai preferred
Salary and Benefits: 
  • Full-time position based on experience and qualifications;
