Position Title:  Field Implementer 
Reports to: Program Advisor
 Location: Pemba, Zanzibar  
Start Date: Mid January 2017 

D-tree International harnesses the power of mobile technology to improve the quality of healthcare delivery by supporting health workers and their supervisors to provide better care to their clients. D-tree's partnership model focuses on supporting existing health systems and programs by collaborating with governments, funding agencies, and NGOs to support frontline health workers in communities and at health facilities. The starting point of the work is the development and delivery of electronic protocols on mobile devices that guide health workers by prompting them to ask specific questions and take appropriate action. D-tree has been working in Zanzibar since 2010 on projects focused on maternal and child health. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, D-tree has trained more than 300 health workers who serve more than 60% of the rural population as part of the Safer Deliveries program. D-tree is currently scaling up this program throughout all of Zanzibar to support Community Health Workers (CHWs) to provide high quality care to pregnant women to encourage facility deliveries and postpartum follow up in order to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.  

The Field Implementer will support all of D-tree’s work in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The position will be based out of  Pemba with occasional travels to Unguja . The Field Implementer will support scale up and implementation of the Safer Deliveries CHW program. This includes introducing the program to District Health Management teams, Shehas and other local leaders; recruiting CHWs and supervisors; leading several trainings with groups of up to 50 individuals to teach CHWs and supervisors about the program and the mobile applications; conducting follow-up visits and mentoring CHWs and supervisors through in-person support and phone calls.
 
We seek a candidate who is motivated, interested in health care and technology, open to innovative ideas and technology, efficient, eager to learn and a team player. You should be comfortable traveling to rural villages and spending time in the field, but should also be comfortable meeting with District and Zonal health teams. The position will require working closely with health workers, district and clinic level supervisors and the D- tree team to implement the programs. Other responsibilities will include helping refine the tools, training health workers and managers to use it, and educating supervisors in managing electronic data. We expect the candidate to be able to contribute to problem solving in a pro-active manner.  

Job Responsibilities
We are looking for candidates who are willing to take on any tasks that are required to make our projects successful. This will include:

1. Coordination of health worker and supervisor activities:

  • Planning facility and community deployments  
  • Designing and implementing trainings and follow-up sessions 
  • Data collection and monitoring  

2. Reporting

  • Write necessary reports to the management 
  • Review, evaluate and present reports 
  • Prepare presentations summarizing program progress
  • Present program findings to the Ministry of Health during quarterly review meetings  

3. IT skills and troubleshooting

  • Testing mobile applications for content and usability
  • Loading applications to phones
  • Trouble-shooting hardware and software issues with mobile devices in clinics and communities
  • Liaising with the program team to ensure successful application updates and identify and solve technical issues as they arise
  • Communicate clearly with Project Manager and Program Coordinator on progress in implementing field activities and any challenges to be addressed  

Required Skills and Experience

  • Work experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience implementing public health or community development programs in Tanzania required; experience with technology in a professional setting desired. 
  • Advanced Diploma required. University Degree preferred.
  • Tanzanian national required. Strong preference for candidates from Zanzibar (especially Pemba). 
  • Language: Excellent written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
  •  Telephone/Computer: Must be familiar with use of information technology tools such as mobile devices (including smart phones) and have strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and internet navigation.
  • Should be motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, team player and comfortable working in the field in rural settings 
  • Proven communication skills, including experience conducting trainings and/or supervision of activities. 
  •  Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and report remotely.
