Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a
Tanzania based non-governmental Institute with a mission of developing and sustaining Health Research and Resource Institute capable of generating new knowledge and relevant information for public health policy and action.  IHI is one of the leading research outfits in Africa maintaining collaboration with several other research Institutes in the world.

IHI invites applications from interested, suitable and qualified Tanzanians to fill the following two positions in the project titled Determining WaSH resilience to climate change in Tanzania and another project tilled Decentralized Sanitation Systems for Dar es Salaam

The positions require candidates who will assist in the development, of a business model for the projects which will be developed based on the market research and potential application that focus on improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) in Tanzania.

POSITION: (1) RESEARCH OFFICER. 
LOCATION: IFAKARA
PROJECT: World Health Organization project titled: Determining WaSH resilience to climate change in Tanzania.

DUTIES. 
In consultation with the project leader; develop and implement the research objectives and according to the scheduled timeframe.
Design and conduct laboratory and field experiments in line with the objectives of the projects.
Ensure that quality control procedures and ethical guidelines are adequately followed in the running of the above projects.
Collect analyses and report on both quantitative and qualitative data.
Supervise field workers, volunteers and technicians as required on the project.
Assist with resource management as budgeted for in the project.
Report on progress and outcomes of the projects at the end of every month by way of electronic or printed reports.
Write and publish high quality scientific papers in peer reviewed and internationally recognized journals.
Present research findings at least twice a year at weekly thematic group meeting and at least once at an national conference during the course of the project.
Liaise with the community, government and other stakeholders as required.
Undertake at least one professional development opportunity in grant writing, paper writing or data analysis during the course of the project.
Assist with other aspects of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects as required.
Use local transport (bicycles) and motorbikes to conduct field work

POSITION: (2) RESEARCH OFFICER. 
LOCATION: DAR ES SALAAM
PROJECT: Human Development Research funded project titled: Decentralized Sanitation Systems for Dar es Salaam.

DUTIES. 
In consultation with the project leader; develop and implement the research objectives and according to the scheduled timeframe.
Design and conduct laboratory and field experiments in line with the objectives of the projects.
Ensure that quality control procedures and ethical guidelines are adequately followed in the running of the above projects.
Collect analyses and report on both quantitative and qualitative data.
Supervise field workers, volunteers and technicians as required on the project.
Assist with resource management as budgeted for in the project.
Report on progress and outcomes of the projects from time to time, by way of electronic or printed reports, institutional presentations and scientific conferences locally
Collect on a quarterly basis the information/data required to support the delivery of the WaSH research results
Write and publish high quality scientific papers in peer reviewed and internationally recognized journals.
Present research findings at least twice a year at weekly thematic group meeting and at least once at an national conference during the course of the project.
Liaise with the community, government and other stakeholders as required.
Undertake at least one professional development opportunity in grant writing, paper writing or data analysis during the course of the project.
Assist with other aspects of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects as required.

 QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH POSITIONS
Bachelor degree in Science or Engineering
Good command of Kiswahili and English
Willingness to conduct fieldwork and laboratory work

DESIRABLE QUALITIES FOR BOTH POSITIONS
Knowledge of water quality monitoring
Knowledge of wastewater treatment
Experience in water point mapping project management
Preparing reports and/or manuscripts
Liaison with community, government and other stakeholders

COMPETENCIES FOR BOTH POSITIONS.
Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Spoken and written English to business standards
Spoken and written Swahili to business standards

   REMUNERATION AND MODE OF EMPLOYMENT
An attractive and competitive remuneration package will be offered to successful candidates as per IHI scales.

This is a 12 Months contract which may be renewable for one year depending on funding.
