Chemonics seeks a part-time food security monitor consultant to support USAID’s Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). FEWS NET is a leading global provider of objective, evidence-based food security information and analysis to inform decisions on humanitarian response and other assistance programs. FEWS NET collaborates with international, regional, and national partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and analysis of potential, emerging, and/or evolving food security issues. FEWS NET monitors Tanzania as a non-presence, remote monitoring country. To support its monitoring, Chemonics seeks a food security monitor consultant to collect information from partners and field visits, and to strengthen FEWS NET’s relationships with partners.

The food security monitor will collect, evaluate, and report information on food security conditions and observed anomalies in food security relevant indicators, and assist with classification of current and projected food security outcomes. The consultant will facilitate access to food security related data and information, maintain contact with food security partners in Tanzania, and support/participate in relevant meetings and activities as necessary. This is a part-time consultancy, up to 10 days per month. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collect relevant food security information from partners
  • Maintain strong relationship with partners (i.e. World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, Ministry of Agriculture, etc.)
  • Participate in MUCHALI information sharing meetings
  • Liaise with the East Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya regularly
  • Travel to areas of concern to collect information, as necessary
  • Deliver information on current and expected food security conditions to the East Africa Regional Office and assist the East Africa Regional Office with classification of current and expected food security outcomes, alerts, and special reports (as needed) about Tanzania ​
  • Supervise cross-border data collection by cross-border monitors Participate in IPC analysis of Tanzania based on monitor availability and as required
Qualifications:
  • A university degree in a discipline relevant to FEWS NET work, such as agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, or social geography
  • Experience working with and coordinating partners, networking, and collaboration
  • At least five years of relevant experience in early warning/food security information systems, food security analysis, or other related fields
  • Experience in and knowledge of the following technical areas: food security, markets and trade, livelihoods and household economy approach (HEA), agro-climatology (agro-meteorology, remote sensing, GIS, etc.), nutrition, agricultural sciences (crops, livestock, pasture, etc.), field assessments (quantitative and/or qualitative), integrated food security phase classification (IPC), analytical and reporting skills
  • Excellent computer skills. GIS applications and mapping skills an advantage
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English and excellent communication and writing skills
