Position: Laboratory assistant
Background:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is an International Nongovernmental Organization that responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. In Tanzania, IRC supporting refugee program in Kigoma Region. Currently the service is provided in Nyarugusu refugee camp in Kasulu District, Nduta/Mtendeli refugee camps in Kibondo district and at a Transit Centre in Kigoma town. At the Transit Centre, IRC support refugees and asylum seekers, support included Camp Management, Health care management and treatment, Child Protection, Community-based Rehabilitation (care for disabled), Vulnerable Care, Youth and Development and Gender-Based Violence. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) now seeks an experienced Laboratory assistant to provide primary health in the overall implementation of Reproduction Health care for the Tanzania country Program in Kigoma region.
IRC seeks to recruit qualified, energetic and committed Laboratory assistantwith the skills in general problem solving, flexible, and able to establish rapport with patients and other staff, cultures and communities, willing to be a team player, able to work in a primary health care setting while focusing on maternal and health care without nearby medical collaboration.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant include, but are not limited, to the following:
MAIN DUTIES:


  • Conduct accurate analysis of the specimen requested.
  • Responsible for requesting essential laboratory reagents, supplies and instruments.
  • Responsible to pack and transport samples for further analysis and confirmation at the National research laboratory or elsewhere when need be.
  • Participate in any disease outbreak campaign in the area.
  • Keep all laboratory records in standard acceptable order.
  • Prepare and submit monthly laboratory activity reports and inventory.
  • Provide on job / in-service training when needed at the clinic.
  • Safeguard all laboratory equipment including the slides, microscopes etc…from damage and unpleasant environment.
  • Be prepared to work until the CO, Nurse or Midwife  has finished attending to patients/clients
  • Report any abnormal parasite discovered with the patient but not requested by the MD, CO, Nurse or midwife
  • Prioritize patients in observation specimen analysis once brought to the laboratory. 
  • Conduct training programs in general health promotion, HIV prevention, nutrition and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education:

  • Certificate in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Certificate of practice registration with a recognized professional body. 
  • Two or more years in concentration in a clinical laboratory in setting where there is not a physicianimmediately available.  
  • Basic knowledge of primary health care
  • Know MoH laboratory standards and guidelines when performing lab activities.
  • Certificate in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution. 
  • Certificate of practice registration with a recognized professional body.  
  • Proficiency in English and Kiswahili Languages, Kurundi/French will be an advantage. 
  • Must be computer literate including Microsoft Word and Excel.  
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and making quick independent decisions on laboratory procedures and testing.
