EMPOWER Study Coordinator

The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) based at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in MwanzaTanzania is a collaborative research unit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the National Institute for Medical ResearchThe mission of the Mwanza
Intervention Trials Unit is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trialsto the highest international standardsto enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into health
policy
The Unit is now inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position

EMPOWER Study Coordinator 
The Study Coordinator will be a member of MITUbased full-time in Mwanza, and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of an implementation science study to assess whether it is feasible, acceptableand safe to offer oral PrEP as part of a combination HIV prevention package that addresses gender-based violencestigma and HIV in adolescent girls and young women aged16-24 years
The post holder will work closely with and report to the Principal Investigators (Pls),and will have an opportunity to contribute to the publication of scientific results. 
Specific responsibilities
·         Planmanage and supervise the research operations in Mwanzato ensure that the study is carried out to the highest international standards following the principles of Good Clinical Practice and Good Participatory Practice. 
·         Collaborate with MITU staff and staff from partner organisationsincluding senior investigators from LSHTM and the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. 
·         Work closely with the Senior Community Liaison Officeat MITU on community engagement activities
·         Supervise and coordinate the activities of the research clinic, including screening, enrolment and follow-up of participants
·         Supervise and coordinate delivery of the intervention
·         Assist with managing the project budget and other project resourcesliaise with MITU and LSHTM staff in setting and reviewing budgets, monitoring expenditure and completing financial reports. 
·         Assist the Pis in developing research tools and study processes and procedures to ensure efficient conduct of the study.
·         Set-up and maintain administrative and communication systems for the study
·         Set-up and maintain the Trial Master File
·         Lead on development of standard operating procedures. 
·         Submit annual progress reports, and amendments to the study protocol as requiredto the Tanzanian and LSHTM ethics committees
·         Liaise with the project qualitative and data management teams and laboratory staff to ensure activities are coordinated and run to schedule
·         Manage data and clinical queries from the data and laboratory teams and supervise the research clinic team in responding to queries
·         Contribute in the preparation of scientific reports and publication1" and their presentation at national and international meetings. 


·         Participate in developing the capacity of junior project staff. 
·         Promote MITU and its core values, and playa supportive role in the delivery of its day-to-day operations and 
strategic goals. 
·         Play an active part in promoting the scientific life at the NIMR Mwanza campus
·         Undertake such other tasks as may reasonably be expected by the PIs
·         Report regularly to the Pis on the progress of the research
Essential criteria for selection 
·         A postgraduate qualification in public health or related field. 
·         At least two years practical experience of research project management in a developing country. 
·         Be familiar with the principles of Good Clinical Practice and Good Participatory Practice
·         Proven managerial and organizational skills 
·         Previous experience of managing research staff. 
·         Demonstrates capacity to work on own initiative and independently. 
·         Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahiland English
·         Demonstrates excellent attention to details
·         Demonstrates commitment to working as part of a multidisciplinary research team
·         Ability to work in a multicultural environment
·         Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Desirable criteria for selection 
·         Medical or nursing degree. 
·         Experience in the field of HIV and/or gender-based violence research
·         Experience in conducting research in a developing country
·         Experience of working in multi-centre studies
·         Experience of working with young people in developing countries
