Project Site Coordinator - Tanzania for Homegarden Scaling Project

The World Vegetable Center is a nonprofit, autonomous international agricultural research center
with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. The Center conducts research
and development programs that contribute to alleviating poverty and malnutrition in the
developing world through the increased production and consumption of nutritious and healthpromoting
vegetables. The World Vegetable Center’s Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office
located in Arusha, Tanzania conducts vegetable research and training and provides information
services for the benefit of its stakeholders in the horticultural sector in eastern and southern Africa.
The Center is seeking a talented, diligent, ambitious and reliable person who places importance on
quality, team-work and diligence for the position of Project Site Coordinator - Tanzania to
coordinate the in-country activities of the project “Deploying Vegetable Seed Kits to Tackle
Malnutrition in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda” (in short, Homegarden Scaling Project) funded by
the USAID. The target is to scale up and enhance widespread and rapid adoption of the Center’s
validated homegarden concept and associated production and processing technologies by target
households in Tanzania. Through deployment of vegetable seed kits with complementary training
and technical backstopping across the entire value chain, over 10,000 target beneficiaries in
Tanzania are expected to improve their household nutrition, diversify their incomes and improve
their social capital. The position will be based at the regional office in Arusha, Tanzania and will
report to the Project Manager. The position is open for Tanzanian nationals only.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of colleagues, implementing partners, consultants and local government partners
in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Homegarden Scaling Project in Tanzania.
Day-to-day supervision of project activities.

• Coordinate the contribution of sub-contracted partners in the project:
o Co-develop partner workplans and expected output and outcomes.
o Monitor the progress of agreed partner workplans; oversight of demonstration gardens,
farmer training, seed distribution, surveys.
o Build synergies among partners in the implementation of project activities; facilitate
communication among partners.
o Organize regular planning and progress team meetings.
o Identify areas for capacity building of partners on the basis of observation, interaction and
evaluation of partners, plan training activities, and coordinate the execution of training
events.
o Resolve minor conflicts among partners when they arise.
• Plan and facilitate workshops.
• Coordinate the development of training manuals for trainers.
• Coordinate the development of dissemination materials for farmers.
• Evaluate outputs, outcomes and impact of the project; keep track of Feed the Future indicators
through the year for timely yearly reporting. Coordinate technical progress reports in
accordance with donor reporting schedules. Write success stories for submission to the Project
Manager.
• Synthesize lessons from project implementation and document lessons in reports. Identify
research questions arising from project implementation for discussion with the Project Manager
and follow up through the research associate or other scientists or students
• Liaise with Country Site Coordinators for Kenya and Uganda and the Project Manager to
harmonize project activities, share lessons learnt and represent the Project Manager on incountry
project-related issues.
• Represent the project in national fora and give presentations when required.
• Liaise with the Center’s colleagues on areas of interest to the project, and on areas that are of
general interest to the Eastern and Southern Regional Office, particularly but not restricted to
Tanzania.
• Promote gender equity within the project as well as in its outcomes and impacts.
• Identify options for improving vegetable seed access to smallholders by building and
strengthening partnerships with the public and private seed sector for impact at the household
level.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Project Manager or his/her appointed
representative.
Skills, knowledge and qualifications
• Applicants must have a minimum of M.Sc. in preferably social or agricultural science
disciplines, with a minimum of 2 years of extensive project coordination experience in food
(nutrition) and agriculture. Good agro-economic background with focus on horticultural valuechains
is a plus.
• Strong written and spoken English language skills.
• Extensive knowledge of and work experience in Tanzania.
• Ability to oversee development/implementation of work plans, reports and presentations;
ability to write clear and concise technical documents; strong organizational and networking
skills. Experience with national partners is a plus.
• Capacity for strong teamwork, partnership building and project management skills as well as
supervisory and mentoring skills.
• Proven skills to work independently.
• Proven interpersonal skills and ability to interact with public, private, and civil society leaders
and groups on data collection and surveying for project monitoring is an advantage.
• Excellent computer skills in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
• Flexibility to travel extensively within the five focus project regions of Tanzania.
