Ubongo is a social enterprise that creates fun, localized edutainment for learners in Africa.  We entertain kids to learn and love learning.  We produce the TV series Ubongo Kids, which teaches basic math concepts through fun, animated stories.  We leverage the power of entertainment, the reach of mass media, and the connectivity of mobile technology to give African students a new way to learn.  Ubongo Kids is watched in over 1.5 million households each weekend, from Tanzania to Ghana, and we are in development on new series and products coming soon.
We are looking for a businessperson with a passion for social change, who can help us scale Ubongo’s business model to reach learners across the continent.  You will join our passionate team in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and take a leading role in strategy, financial planning, reporting and risk management, as we grow across Africa.
Responsibilities:
  • Work together with CEO and COO to lead Ubongo’s strategy and growth, as we expand across the continent
  • Refine and continually update financial plans and models, always keeping in mind Ubongo’s mission
  • Liaise with investors, sponsors, advertisers and funders  
  • Coordinate financing and investment rounds, and apply for grants & other forms of financing
  • Explore new revenue streams, partnerships and opportunities for expansion and spin-offs products
  • Oversee financial and accounting practices: budgets, taxes, financial reports and audits
  • Oversee legal activities including contract negotiation
  • Fill in wherever else is needed! We’re a small company and everyone wears many hats!

Background:

MBA and 3+ years of operational and financial management experience, preferably in media or education sector

OR related Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years management experience, preferably in media or education sector

Skills:
  • Passion for Ubongo’s vision of bringing localized edutainment to learners across Africa
  • Fluent in English, with working knowledge of Kiswahili, French or other African language
  • Deep understanding of at least one of the following sectors: education/ edtech, social business, broadcast media in Africa
  • Strong familiarity with startup/SME financing and development, legalese and accounting
  • Confident using web-based accounting and productivity tools (we use Sage, Google Drive and Asana, insightly among others)
  • Creative, flexible, always looking to learn new skills and willing to help out in areas outside the jobs description
  • Interest and passion for finding sustainable, scalable solutions for social impact
