The East African Community is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising the Republic of Burundi, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

The EAC mission is to widen and deepen economic, political, social and cultural integration to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, trade and investments. Effective discharge of functions towards achievement of the EAC mission requires policy research to inform the Community’s decision-making processes.

The overall objective of the EAC Policy Research Unit is to enhance implementation of EAC’s programmes and projects by Partner States. The specific objectives are to:- strengthen research and policy analysis capacities of the EAC Secretariat; and to enhance development and coordination of evidence-based regional policy research in the EAC. The EAC Secretariat received a grant from the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) to operationalise the EAC Policy Research Unit for a period of 4 years. Part of the funding will be applied to support staff under this unit.

Job Grade: Equivalent to Professional Position

Job reports to: Senior Research Fellow

Job Purpose:
This position will provide technical support services to policy research and analysis relating to the EAC Policy Research Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Research Assistant shall perform the following functions:

Assist researchers in both secondary and primary data collection, analysis and reporting;
Conduct literature reviews;
Prepare timely narrative and financial reports on on-going research/analysis for on-going assignments;
Prepare research outputs for publication and dissemination;
Monitor and report on the Research Unit’s budget performance and outputs; and
Carry out any other duty as may be assigned from time to time by the Senior Research Fellow.

Qualifications and Experience:
Academic and Professional Qualifications

At least a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Business Administration, social sciences, or other related field from a recognized and accredited academic institution. A Masters degree will be an added advantage.

Work Experience

At least 5 years’ experience in data collection, analysis and reporting.

Skills and Competencies:
Excellent communication, analytical and presentation skills as well as good interpersonal relations;
Essential knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications and analytical computer programmes for social research; and
Proficiency in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of French is an added advantage.

All candidates applying must have qualifications that are recognized by the relevant national accreditation body in their respective countries. This condition is applicable for locally and internationally attained qualifications.

Relevant Working Experience

Internship, training, apprenticeship and clerkship will not be considered as relevant work experience.

Terms and Conditions of Service:
This is a non-established position tenable for an initial contract of one (1) year renewable subject to the performance and availability of funds.
